Neuronal Tracers

Vector Laboratories’ NEUROBIOTIN Tracer is a highly regarded and frequently cited reagent for intracellular neuronal labeling. Its popularity stems from key features including high solubility, net positive charge, fixable amine groups, low molecular weight, and reliable detection via (strept)avidin enzyme or fluorophore conjugates. These properties enable efficient visualization and image capture. To meet the growing demand for tracers with similar benefits and expanded versatility, several new compounds have been synthesized. NEUROBIOTIN 488, an amine-containing biotin derivative conjugated to a bright green fluorophore, is readily transported along axons and fine projections, and is compatible with patch clamp and pressure injection techniques. NEUROBIOTIN 350, also an amine-containing biotin derivative, carries a bright blue fluorophore to contrast with green or red markers and is highly soluble in various buffer and salt solutions. For experiments requiring extended postinjection survival, NEUROBIOTIN-Plus offers resistance to biotinidase degradation, along with fixable amines, high solubility, and low molecular weight. Compared to biocytin and other tracers, NEUROBIOTIN products offer advantages such as superior solubility, more efficient iontophoresis, longer intracellular retention, non-toxicity, and compatibility with fixatives like formalin or glutaraldehyde.
