Blocking Reagents
Reduce Noise, Enhance Clarity.
Blocking Solutions for Reliable Immunostaining Results
Blocking solutions can prevent background interference from different sources, including autofluorescence, endogenous enzyme activity, endogenous biotin, or interactions of detection reagents with tissue/cell proteins and other macromolecules. By effectively preventing nonspecific binding, these blocking reagents ensure optimal signal detection and clarity in your experiments.
Vector Laboratories offers blocking solutions for a variety of applications. Explore our comprehensive selection of high-performance blocking reagents tailored to meet your specific needs.
Protein Blocking Reagents
Protein blocking reagents prevent non-specific protein interactions between detection reagents and target protein elements that can cause unwanted background staining.
Normal Sera
A product widely used as a general protein block in tissue and cell-based staining. For the best results, choose a serum species for blocking that matches the species of the secondary antibody.
Carbo-Free Blocking Solution
A product suitable for lectin staining or use in multiplex IHC applications when lectins are used for at least one label because this solution does not contain interfering glycoproteins.
Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA)
Our BSA is free of the glycoproteins and impurities that can be present in other grades of BSA and can introduce artifacts or increase background staining. For use in IHC, ICC, IF, blotting, and ELISA applications.
Animal-Free Blocking
A plant-protein derived universal antibody diluent and protein blocking reagent for use in IHC and IF workflows, especially in multiplexing applications where primary or secondary antibodies from multiple species are used.
Endogenous Enzyme Blocking Reagents
Prevent interference from endogenous enzymes such as peroxidase or alkaline phosphatase in your assays. Vector’s enzyme blocking reagents are designed to inhibit these enzymes, ensuring clear and accurate signal development.
BLOXALL®
A dual enzyme blocking reagent that inactivates endogenous peroxidase, pseudoperoxidase, and alkaline phosphatase.
Levamisole
A competitive inhibitor of alkaline phosphatase which can be added to the alkaline phosphatase substrate solution.

Autofluorescence Quencher
Vector TrueVIEW® Autofluorescence Quenching Kit specifically binds and quenches autofluorescent elements from non-lipofuscin sources, significantly enhancing signal-to-noise in most immunofluorescence assays.

With TrueVIEW

Human tonsil (FFPE); Section stained for AE1/AE3 using fluorescein label (green). Treated with TrueVIEW and mounted with VECTASHIELD® Vibrance Antifade Mounting Medium with DAPI (nuclei blue).
Species-on-Species Blocking
When an unconjugated primary antibody is made in the same species as your tissue specimen, subsequent detection using a secondary antibody usually generates high background staining and requires additional blocking.

Figure 2: LEFT image: Serial sections of human kidney (FFPE) showing strong, specific staining (brown regions) using human anti-cytokeratin primary antibody detected with HOH-3000. RIGHT image: Negative control. Serial sections of human kidney (FFPE) showing an absence of staining (no background) with the omission of the primary antibody in the HOH-3000 assay. Note: Both sections counterstained with hematoxylin (blue nuclei).
