Sambucus Nigra Lectin (SNA, EBL), Biotinylated (B-1305-2)

[text-backorder]

Description

Sambucus nigra lectin, isolated from elderberry bark, binds preferentially to sialic acid attached to terminal galactose in α-2,6 and to a lesser degree, α-2,3 linkage. Binding is also inhibited to some extent by lactose or galactose. This lectin appears to bind sialic acid linked to N-acetylgalactosamine or galactose. SNA has been reported to inhibit cell-free protein synthesis.

Biotinylated Sambucus nigra lectin has an appropriate number of biotins bound to provide the optimum staining characteristics for this lectin. This conjugate is supplied essentially free of unconjugated biotins and is preserved with sodium azide.

Please note that SNL and SNA are equivalent. Historically, Vector Laboratories has used SNL as the acronym for Sambucus Nigra Lectin. SNA, reflective of Sambucus Nigra Agglutinin, is commonly used  within the scientific community for this product, e.g., as shown for B-1305 on the NCFG website. Product FAQs

From our experience we have found that some lectins require Ca++ to be present for optimal binding activity. We suggest using calcium chloride (CaCl2) to fortify working solutions and ensure a minimum level of Ca++ is met. This may be particularly pertinent if using phosphate based buffers as diluents and storage solutions.

Technical Information

This biotinylated lectin is an ideal intermediate for examining glycoconjugates using the Biotin-Avidin/Streptavidin System. First the biotinylated lectin is added, followed by the VECTASTAIN ABC Reagent, Avidin D conjugate, or streptavidin derivative.

Elution: 500 mM lactose in buffered saline followed by 500 mM lactose in acetic acid
